The symptoms of acne may vary depending on the severity of the condition, and may cause whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, nodules, or cystic lesions. While this condition is most commonly experienced by teenagers, it can affect individuals of all ages. Acne can appear on almost any area of the body, but is very common on the face, forehead, upper back, shoulders, and chest.

There are certain factors that may worsen acne, including hormonal changes, certain medications, stress, or diet. Some individuals may also experience acne due to genetics; if both of your patients had acne, then you are more likely to also develop it.

What are Acne Scars?

For some, their acne can result in acne scars. When an acne blemish causes inflammation, the acne pore will swell and the wall of the pore will breakdown. Sometimes, this breakdown of tissue will be small and the scars will heal fairly quickly, while other blemishes cause deeper scars.

Overall, there are two main types of acne scars:

• Scars that look like an indentation on the surface of the skin: Ice pick, rolling, and boxcar scarring.
• Scars that look raised on the surface of the skin: Hypertrophic or keloid scarring.

Individuals with lighter skin types may experience red marks or Post Inflammatory Erythema (PIE), darker skin types are more likely to experience dark spots or Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) acne scarring that remains long-term after acne has healed.
