What is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a component of the blood that contains proteins that support cell regrowth. PRP therapy combines a PRP facial with microneedling to improve the overall health and appearance of the skin.

Who can Benefit from PRP?

Individuals who wish to improve the look and feel of their skin can often benefit from PRP therapy. However, those with blood or bleeding disorders or who are pregnant may not be the best candidates for this treatment. What to Expect?

The first step in PRP therapy is to collect your blood plasma. To do this, your blood will first be drawn from your arm, just like it would at a regular blood draw visit. This blood will then be placed into a centrifuge, which is a machine that separates the red blood cells from the blood plasma. The platelet-rich-plasma from your blood will be used during this treatment, since it contains nutrients and growth factors to combat signs of visible aging.

At Skin Refine Medspa, the microneedling portion of the treatment is performed using the SkinPen or Eclipse PRP® with microneedling. The microneedling pen used contains tiny needles which creates micro-wounds in your skin. After the tiny wounds have been created, the platelet-rich-plasma is collected and then placed onto the treated area, sinking into the deeper layers of the skin. The small wounds that were created by the microneedling pen will stimulate collagen and elastin production in the skin during the healing process. This increase in collagen is what will provide age-defying results. The entire procedure can take anywhere from 30-40 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. We recommend a series of 6 treatment sessions for best results.

What are the Results?

Following PRP therapy, patients may experience slight pinkness of the skin, which will resolve over time. Most people can see a healthy glow immediately after treatment, and the benefits will continue to improve over the next several weeks, since collagen production takes place gradually. There is no downtime required, though we do ask that individuals limit sun exposure following their treatment, and remember to wear SPF when spending time outdoors.
