What are PDO Threads?

Polydioxanone (PDO) threads are medical-grade thread material that is used in surgical procedures when skin needs to be tightened or wounds brought together with a dissolvable suture. These absorbable fibers are thinner than a human hair and not only physically lift loose skin, but also stimulate elastin and collagen production, which are both important for maintaining firm and healthy skin for the long term.

PDO threads are available in three different thread forms including:

  • Barbed threads: The unique nature of these sutures allows them to latch into tissues when implanted during a PDO thread lift procedure. This results in a noticeable lift to sagging skin, as the thread is actually physically pulling up the skin for a more youthful appearance. As such, this type of PDO absorbable thread lift is sometimes called a non-surgical facelift. The presence and tension of the threads also stimulate collagen production over time.
  • Smooth threads: Like barbed threads, these sutures also stimulate elastin and collagen synthesis. Over time, this rejuvenates areas that have deflated or creased over time due to aging skin structures, providing patients with a more youthful look.
  • Twist threads: These threads are coiled and work best when inserted directly into facial folds or wrinkles. Collagen stimulation provides natural-looking, beautiful results over time.

What to Expect From PDO Threads

During a PDO thread lift treatment, lidocaine will be injected into the entry points for the threads to ensure patient comfort. Then, the PDO threads will be skillfully introduced into the skin through a very fine needle or cannula. Overall, treatment can take 30-45 minutes to complete.

Results of PDO Threads

Following a PDO thread lift procedure, there is little to no downtime required, though some temporary swelling and bruising may occur for the first couple of days. Patients should not receive any dental treatments for a couple of weeks following treatment, as holding the mouth open for long periods of time may affect your results. We also ask that you avoid rubbing your face as much as possible the week after treatment to ensure optimal results. Final results from a thread lift can last anywhere from 1-3 years.
